Compostable Trash Bags

Small compostable trash bags

Another way we are working toward sustainability

Glad so glad. Today I found and got bio-degradable trash bags for all the bathrooms. They aren’t as pretty as the white ones, but we like very much that they are compostable and are sure many of our bed and breakfast guests will think so too.

Here are some of the other little things we do in caring for the environment:

  1. family sizes of amenities (plus personal sizes for those who prefer)
  2. blue boxes in the rooms and suites (for guests who want to recycle paper, plastic and metal)
  3. Home-filtered water in the room’s fridges (as well as bottled water for those who prefer)
  4. a promise to re-use the brochures guests choose not to take away with them.

Come in out of the Cold

Oh man it was enough to put a chill in one today.  Isn’t it great that every suite / studio and room has a natural gas fireplace and jetted tub.

Cascadia Suite's bedroom with fireplace and more easy chairs

Cascadia's Bedroom with cozy fireplace

Plus your suite or studio also has a fridge to put your bottle of wine into.  Come be a slug.  Why not order in too? … your private servery has the plates, the mugs, the cutlery, the napkins, the barware … you’ll NEVER have to go out at all!!

The Quiet Season

It may seem quiet, but there are a myriad of activities here in Victoria that happen during “the quiet season” …  Opera, Ballet, live Theatre, amazing holiday crafts fairs, the Storytellers’ Guild,  Folk Music Night at Norway House,  Hatley Park  as you’ve never seen it (see insert), the salmon  spawning spectacle at Goldstream Park, etc.

Fine restaurants, bistros and brewpubs, besieged in the summer by the high season crush, now become cozy places to “pop” into without reservations, and try the newest and the freshest and the most sumptuous offerings.

And, the lovely tea house you couldn’t get into last summer.   Guess what?   They’re waiting for you.

And,  oh,  did we mention our off-season rates??

33rd Annual Victoria Classic Boat Festival

The Classic Boat Festival has become a major event in Victoria’s summer calendar.

It started in 1977 as a one-time event, but has become a very popular annual event with as many as 100 boats participating from all over the world.

Eligible vessels must be well-maintained and of traditional construction built to a classic design. Awards are presented in more than 30 categories including:

  • Best Restored Sail                                                              Chris Gower-Reese's 50 ft motor yacht - Gratitude
  • Best Overall Powerboat
  • Farthest Away Boat
  • Best Training Vessel
  • Best Liveaboard …
  • and the ominous Master of Disaster Award.

The boats start arriving on the Thursday prior to the Labour Day weekend and the festival officially begins on the Friday with the arrival of the Honorary Commodore, followed by the Welcoming Reception in the Maritime Museum of BC.

A number of the vessels will be open to the public over the weekend in addition to the activity of the smaller boats, motor and steam, running around the harbour.

There are sailing races, a steam vessel parade, a rowing regatta … the Sunday morning Sail-past is always a great spectacle.   And our small, cup-shaped Inner Harbour means there are excellent viewing locations, everywhere.

A word to the wise … Labour Day Weekend is the single busiest of the entire summer weekend for accommodation … so plan your accommodations well ahead.
